Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday called the stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur as “deeply concerning” and directed ministers and district officials to ensure prompt medical care for the injured.

The tragedy claimed at least 33 lives, including several children, and forced the actor-turned-politician to pause his speech as many attendees collapsed amid severe overcrowding.

“The news coming from Karur is deeply concerning. I have instructed former minister @V_Senthilbalaji, Hon’ble Minister @Subramanian_Ma, as well as the District Collector, to ensure that immediate medical treatment is provided to the public who have fainted due to overcrowding and have been admitted to hospitals,” said CM Stalin in an X post.

“I have also directed Minister @Anbil_Mahesh from the neighbouring Tiruchirappalli district to extend all necessary assistance on a war footing. Additionally, I have spoken to the ADGP to initiate swift measures to stabilise the situation there,” he added.

He further urged the public to extend “full cooperation to the doctors and the police.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow over the stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, calling the incident “deeply saddening.”

“The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” said PM Modi in an X post.

Former DMK minister Senthil Balaji, who visited the hospital to review the situation, said that around 58 people have been admitted after the stampede incident.

“Till now, 31 people have died in the stampede and 58 people have been admitted to the hospital. After the stampede incident, the CM immediately enquired and ordered the district collector, SP, and me to rush to the hospital, advising us to call extra doctors and provide proper treatment,” he said.

He added that CM Stalin will visit Karur tomorrow, on September 28, to take stock of the situation.

“As of now, 46 persons are in private hospital, and 12 persons are admitted in a government hospital for treatment,” he added.

The permit for Vijay’s Karur rally had anticipated a turnout of around 10,000, but authorities estimated that nearly 50,000 people gathered at the 1.2 lakh square feet venue.

As the crowd became increasingly congested, several party workers and children reportedly fainted, forcing Vijay to pause his speech. He urged calm and appealed to his supporters to make way for emergency ambulances to reach the injured.
