Mumbai’s iconic Siddhivinayak Temple, one of the most visited religious shrines in India, is set for a massive facelift aimed at improving facilities for devotees and enhancing safety. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a special project worth nearly Rs 78 crore in its first phase. Tenders have already been invited for the work.

The Siddhivinayak Temple attracts lakhs of devotees every year, with numbers increasing steadily during festivals, especially Ganesh Chaturthi. With rising footfalls, the need for better infrastructure, security, and crowd management has become more pressing. The new plan focuses on both beautification of the premises and improving facilities to handle the growing number of visitors.

According to BMC officials, the project will be executed in phases. The first phase will cover essential works such as resurfacing approach roads, construction of underground vehicle parking space, upgradation of security wall, improving water and drainage systems, carrying out electrical upgrades, and restoring roofs and structural elements. Construction of new facilities, including a dedicated members’ hall, are also planned. The concerns of local shops will be also taken into consideration. A project management consultant has been appointed to supervise the work and ensure smooth execution. The second phase, to be launched later, will cover additional improvements based on requirements observed after the first round of upgrades.

Concerns about safety were raised earlier this month during Ganeshotsav, when heavy crowds flocked to the temple complex. The huge turnout highlighted the urgent need for stronger infrastructure and better safety arrangements. Officials said the current plan addresses these concerns by creating a more organised and safer space for devotees.

Recently, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde visited the temple premises and reviewed the proposed works. During his visit, he assured that the state government would extend full support to the project.

The Siddhivinayak Temple, located in Prabhadevi, is not only a spiritual landmark but also a cultural symbol of Mumbai. The new modernisation project is expected to transform the visitor experience, offering devotees a smoother, safer, and more comfortable darshan. For the BMC, this initiative marks a significant step in combining heritage with modern facilities, ensuring that one of India’s most prominent temples keeps pace with the growing demands of the city and its people.
