Operations at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport were significantly affected as bad weather led to the cancellation of 30 flights and delays to 42 others, an airport official told news agency ANI.

Due to the worsening weather situation, airlines have asked passengers to plan their travel with caution.

IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory for its passengers on Tuesday, stating that some routes across Kolkata were impacted due to heavy rain in the city.

“Some routes across Kolkata have been impacted by heavy rain, leading to temporary blocks or diversions.

We recommend planning your journey accordingly, and leave with a bit of extra time in hand. Please keep a tab on your flight status via our app or website before heading out”,” it said in a post on X.

SpiceJet also issued a similar advisory saying that the all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights at Kolkata Airport may be affected.

“Due to bad weather in Kolkata (CCU), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may be affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via http://spicejet.com/#status,” it said on X.

Air India also urged the travellers to check flight status before leaving for the airport.

“Persistent and heavy rain may impact flights to and from Kolkata today. Please check your flight status at https://airindia.com/in/en/manage/flight-status.html before leaving for the airport and allow extra time for your journey due to traffic and waterlogging,” it said.

Train Operations Hit

The downpour disrupted traffic movement in multiple areas and caused inconvenience to the citizens as well.

Howrah station yard, Sealdah South station yard, Chitpur North Cabin, and different car sheds were also waterlogged due to the heavy rains, according to a press release by the Eastern Railway (ER).

Train Movement was suspended in the Sealdah South section due to waterlogging. The release said that the train movement was suspended on the Circular Railway line due to waterlogging on the track and in the Chitpur yard.

Several trains, including Hazarduari Express (13113) and Sealdah Jangipur Express (13177) were also cancelled amid waterlogging.

Heavy Rain Paralyses City

Water entered many houses and residential complexes in the city as roads went underwater, also causing traffic chaos.

According to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), the Garia Kamdahari recorded 332 mm of rain in just a few hours, followed by Jodhpur Park at 285 mm. The Kalighat area recorded 280 mm of rain, Topsia 275 mm, Ballygunge 264 mm, while Thantania in north Kolkata received 195 mm of rain.

The city is bracing for more downpour as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal is likely to bring heavy rain in several south Bengal districts.
