Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office on Monday updated his X cover image with the slogan “Har Ghar Swadeshi, Ghar Ghar Swadeshi,” giving fresh momentum to push for self-reliance alongside the rollout of next-generation Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms.

The GST changes, effective from September 22, the first day of Navratri, mark what PM Modi described as the start of a nationwide “Bachat Utsav” or festival of savings.

In his address to the nation on Sunday, the Prime Minister said the reforms would ease household expenses, strengthen small businesses, and make India more attractive to global investors.

“From tomorrow, the nation will celebrate the GST Bachat Utsav. Your savings will rise, and you will have more freedom to buy what you need. This reform will benefit every section of society,” PM Modi said.

The reforms introduce a simplified two-slab GST structure of 5% and 18%. Goods previously taxed at 12% will now move into the 5% category, while most items earlier under the 28% bracket will shift to 18%. A 40% levy, through compensation cess, will continue for luxury and sin goods.

PM Modi also penned an open letter to citizens, praising the launch of the “GST Bachat Utsav.”

“On the auspicious occasion of Navratri, I extend my warm greetings to you and your families. May the festival bring health, happiness, and prosperity to all. This year, there is an additional reason to celebrate — from September 22, the next-generation GST reforms have come into effect, ushering in a nationwide ‘GST Bachat Utsav’ or savings festival,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Tying the tax reform to his broader self-reliance message, PM Modi urged citizens to prioritise Made-in-India products.

“To achieve the goal of a developed India, we must adopt self-reliance. Our MSMEs have a vital role in this journey,” he said.

He further called for reducing dependence on imports: “Many foreign products have unknowingly become part of our daily lives. What we need and can produce domestically must be manufactured within the country.”

PM Modi noted that just as self-reliance had once powered India’s independence movement, it would now drive national prosperity.
