A group of tourists had a narrow escape on Sunday evening when their SUV was nearly dragged into the Arabian Sea at Kalamb beach in Vasai, about 75 km from Mumbai.

Police said the visitors had driven their white Scorpio too close to the shoreline, where it got stuck in wet sand as the tide rose.

Within minutes, waves began lashing the vehicle, leaving the occupants stranded.

A video circulating on social media showed the SUV partially submerged, with locals forming a human chain and pulling it back to shore.

Eyewitnesses described the effort as a “tug-of-war with the sea.”

While the exact number of people inside the vehicle remains unclear, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported.

The SUV was eventually dragged out with the help of residents.

Authorities have once again cautioned beachgoers against driving near the waterline. “Vehicles can sink quickly in soft sand, and rising tides create life-threatening situations,” an officer said.

This is not the first such incident along Maharashtra’s coastline.

In July, three men were detained after allegedly driving under the influence onto Juhu Beach and straight into the sea.

Their car got stuck in the sand, and police booked them for rash and negligent driving.
