The Supreme Court pulled up a woman for demanding Rs 5 crore in alimony to dissolve her marriage of just one year, calling the demand excessive and cautioning that such a stance could invite “very harsh orders.”
A bench led by Justice JB Pardiwala directed both parties to return to the Supreme Court Mediation Centre on October 5 for another round of discussions.

“If this is going to be the stance of the wife, we may have to pass some orders which she may not like. We expect her to make a reasonable demand and bring this litigation to an end,” Justice Pardiwala said during the hearing.
The bench observed that the marriage had lasted barely a year and advised the husband against reconciliation.
“You will be making a mistake by calling her back. You won’t be able to keep her. The dreams are very big,” Justice Pardiwala remarked.
According to submissions before the court, the husband, an engineer working with Amazon, has offered between Rs 35–40 lakh as a full and final settlement, which the wife rejected.
Her lawyer admitted that earlier mediation attempts had failed, but the court pressed her to adopt a more practical approach to resolve the dispute.
The court will revisit the matter after the mediation centre submits its report.
