Maa Brahmacharini Vrat Katha

The Sanskrit terms “Vrat” and “Katha” mean devotional or religious “vow[s]” and “stories” or “tales.” Vrat Katha, thus, refers to tales of religious commitments and is usually associated with fasting in Hinduism. In the case of goddess Brahmacharini, it specifically refers to the vows she took and how she fasted to attain Lord Shiva as her husband.

Brahmacharini is the name by which we refer to the unmarried form of goddess Parvati. In her previous life, she was Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. During a Yagna, Daksha had intentionally chosen not to invite Sati or Lord Shiva, her husband, to attend the ritual.

Despite Shiva’s warning, Sati attended Daksha’s Yajna uninvited and was cruelly snubbed by him in front of his guests. He then insulted her husband, Shiva, which hurt her deeply and pushed her to immolate herself.

She was reborn as Parvati to King Himavat. To win back Shiva as her husband in her new life, Parvati became a Brahmacharini and did severe penance on Narada Muni’s advice. Despite being a princess, she left her father’s palace and stayed under the open skies in scorching heat, during thunderstorms and during the harsh winters.

For 1000 years, she survived only on a diet of flowers and fruits. For the next 100, she consumed only leafy vegetables. While praying to Lord Shiva for 3000 years, she survived on a diet of Bilva leaves only.

At one time, she even stopped taking any food or water. It is Maa Brahmacharini’s intense devotion and resolve that inspires her devotees.

Bhog

Sugar, which embodies sweetness, purity, and devotion, is the traditional bhog that is offered to Maa Brahmacharini.
