Estonia calls for emergency UNSC meeting over Russian jet incursion

Amid the brewing tensions in Eastern Europe, reports are emerging that the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the Russian incursion into Estonia’s airspace

Amid the brewing tensions in Eastern Europe, reports are emerging that the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the Russian incursion into Estonia’s airspace. The news was confirmed by the officials of both the Baltic nations and the UN on Sunday.

According to CNN, the emergency meeting of the body was requested by Estonia after three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered its airspace over the Gulf of Finland without permission on Friday. The Estonian authorities said the Russian jets remained in the country’s airspace for 12 minutes before it was intercepted by Nato.

While calling for the emergency meeting, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in a post on X that Russia’s actions “undermine principles vital to the security of all UN member states.” “When such actions are committed by a permanent member of the Security Council, they must be addressed by that very body,” Tsahkna wrote in a post on Sunday.

Russia continues to deny the incursion

According to the Estonian Foreign Ministry, the UNSC is expected to discuss what the European nations have been describing as a “blatant, reckless, and flagrant violation of NATO airspace” and Russia’s “repeated violations of international law.” Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry has denied that its jets entered the Estonian airspace, insisting the flights were conducted “in strict accordance with international rules.”

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary general, said the emergency meeting is scheduled for 10 am EST on Monday. Apart from this, Ukraine has also submitted a request to attend the Security Council meeting and present its position. According to CNN, the Ukrainian request was directed to the Republic of Korea, which holds the rotating presidency of the council.

“For the first time in 34 years, Estonia has requested an emergency UNSC meeting,” Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X. “This shows the unprecedented scale of threats posed by aggressive Russia to the stability of Europe.”

Shortly after the Russian incursion, Estonia requested Nato Article 4 consultations. The mechanism allows any member to formally bring an issue to the attention of the alliance’s principal political decision-making body. A meeting in this regard is due to take place this week.

It is pertinent to note that Estonia is the second Nato member to have requested Article 4 consultations in recent days. The request came just days after Poland called for the enforcement of the Article last week after several Russian drones and fighter jets entered its airspace.

In the midst of this, Swedish and German forces on Sunday reported that their fighter jets were scrambled over the South Baltic Sea to identify and monitor a Russian IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying in international airspace without a flight plan or radio contact.
