Discover the truth about sunscreen myths and how modern formulas keep your skin safe, healthy, and glowing every day.

Sunscreen should be used year-round, not just in summer.

Sunscreen should be used year-round, not just in summer.

Sunscreen has long been hailed as the ultimate defense against sun damage, premature aging, and even skin cancer. Yet, despite its importance, misconceptions continue to cloud the conversation. From believing that sunscreen is only needed at the beach to assuming darker skin tones don’t require protection, these myths often prevent people from building effective sun-care habits.

Sunscreen is non-negotiable, regardless of where you live, your skin type, or the weather outside. Let’s bust some of the most common myths and discover how modern formulas make sun protection effortless, comfortable, and effective.

Myth 1: Sunscreen Is Only for Sunny Days

One of the most widespread misconceptions is that sunscreen is unnecessary when the sun isn’t shining brightly. In reality, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate through clouds. This means that even on overcast or rainy days, your skin is still exposed to harmful radiation that can accelerate aging and increase the risk of sunburn or long-term damage.

Myth 2: Sunscreen Leaves a White Cast

The “ghostly” layer left behind by traditional sunscreens is a major reason many skip application. This is especially challenging for Indian and deeper skin tones, where a chalky residue is more prominent.

Myth 3: Darker Skin Doesn’t Need Sunscreen

It’s true that melanin offers some natural defense against UV rays, but it is far from complete protection. People with medium to dark skin tones are still at risk of sun-induced hyperpigmentation, uneven tone, and long-term damage. Sunscreen is crucial for maintaining skin health, regardless of complexion.

Myth 4: Sunscreen Is Always Sticky and Heavy

Another persistent myth is that sunscreen feels uncomfortable, greasy, or suffocating. While this may have been true with older formulations, innovations in skincare have transformed the experience.

Myth 5: All Sunscreens Are the Same

One of the biggest myths is that all sunscreens are the same. There are two main types: chemical and mineral sunscreen.

Chemical sun filters penetrate the skin and absorb UV rays, which can cause irritation and breakouts for many. Mineral sunscreen, on the other hand, works by creating a protective layer on the skin and does not irritate it.

As Akanksha Sharma, CEO & Co-Founder, CITTA, explains, “Sunscreen isn’t seasonal or optional; it’s a year-round essential for everyone. It helps prevent both visible damage, like tanning and pigmentation, and invisible damage, like DNA changes in skin cells. That’s why  we curate our formulations differently, so applying sunscreen never feels like a chore.”

According to Aparna Shahi, founder, Gabit Skincare, “People often think that if it says SPF, it’s good for sun protection. But any SPF isn’t enough. It should be at least SPF 30, better yet, SPF 50+. Also, SPF only measures UVB protection, while PA indicates UVA protection and both need to be at the right level to avoid skin damage. Another myth is that sunscreen is optional, only needed for beach holidays or sunny days. UV rays penetrate clouds and even glass, so daily use is essential. Skipping it causes silent damage that leads to pigmentation and premature aging. And just a morning application isn’t enough, you need to reapply every 2 hours, especially on days with high sun exposure.”

Making Sunscreen a Lifestyle

Sunscreen is not just about avoiding sunburn; it’s about protecting your skin’s future. Incorporating a formula like CITTA’s into your routine makes the process seamless:

Under Makeup: Works as a perfect base.

On the Go: Lightweight, non-sticky finish ideal for daily commutes.

Every Season: From monsoons to winters, UV rays are always present.

For Everyone: Suitable for all genders and skin types.

Busting sunscreen myths reveals one clear truth: sun protection should never be skipped. With smarter, more skin-friendly formulations from brands like CITTA, you no longer have to choose between safety and comfort.
