Sheena Bora, who was allegedly killed by her mother Indrani Mukherjea in April 2012, reportedly wanted to take ‘sanyas’ (retirement) as she was fed up with the drama surrounding her life, a childhood friend said, citing an old email exchange while deposing as a prosecution witness.

A 38-year-old witness, who was a former school friend of Bora in Guwahati and now a husband, told the court about email conversations with the victim in the ongoing trial of the Sheena Bora murder case. As per the email conversations, Bora was “fed up with problems and dramas surrounding her life” and said she wanted to take ‘sanyas’, according to the Times of India.

Bora’s friend said she used to speak to Bora earlier and also exchanged email communications with her until one day all communication stopped.

Indrani and her former husband, Sanjiv Khanna, and Peter Mukerjea, also an ex-husband now, are facing trial in the Sheena Bora murder case for the alleged conspiracy and execution of the crime.

Mukerjea, a former media executive who is the main accused in the case, was arrested in August 2015 after Bora’s murder came to the fore. She has denied her involvement in the incident. Mukerjea’s former husband, Peter Mukerjea, was also arrested for an alleged conspiracy in connection with the murder.

What Did The Witness Say?

As per the witness, Sheena was in the same school as her until Class 12 in Guwahati, after which she left for Mumbai in 2006. “In Nov 2011, I met Sheena in Guwahati during my wedding. Sheena was there for about a week,” she was quoted as saying by TOI.

The witness said Bora had also informed her of marrying Rahul Mukerjea, the son of Peter Mukerjea from his previous marriage, and said she was “happy with Rahul”. She also told the court that Bora never shared a good relationship with Indrani and had described her difficult ties in the emails.

The witness testified that she last spoke to Bora on April 15, 2012. She stated that “around April 24 or 25,” she received a text message from Sheena’s phone mentioning a breakup with Rahul and plans to change her phone number. The message also said Sheena would be staying off social media for a while and reassured her not to worry.

However, when the witness later tried to call Bora, the phone was switched off. She also said Rahul contacted her later when Bora did not return after he dropped her in Bandra to shop with Indrani, and that everyone asked him not to worry since she was with Indrani, as per the report.

The prosecution has alleged that following Bora’s death, Indrani was the one who allegedly sent messages using Sheena’s devices. Bora, 24, was allegedly strangled to death in a car by Mukerjea, her driver Shyamvar Rai, and former husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012 in Mumbai. The deceased’s body was then charred in a forest in the neighbouring Raigad district, the prosecution has alleged.
