Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday planted a Kadamb sapling gifted to him by King Charles III of the United Kingdom on his 75th birthday, at his official residence.
The Kadamb tree symbolises the friendship and shared dedication to environmental sustainability between India and the UK. The gift was inspired by PM Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, which encourages people to plant trees in honour of their mothers, blending respect for motherhood with environmental conservation.

In a separate post, the High Commission recalled PM Modi’s visit to the UK earlier in July, during which he presented King Charles with a ‘Sonoma’ tree under the same initiative. This mutual exchange reflects the strong partnership between the two nations, especially in the areas of climate action and clean energy cooperation—key pillars of the Commonwealth and the UK-India Vision 2035.
“During his visit to the UK in July, PM Modi gifted His Majesty The King a ‘Sonoma’ tree as part of the same initiative. Collaboration on climate and clean energy is a key pillar of the Commonwealth and the UK-India partnership as set out by the two PMs in Vision 2035,” it further wrote.
The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative aims to honor mothers by planting trees in their names. According to the Government of India, this simple act serves a dual purpose: paying tribute to the nurturing role of mothers while contributing to the health of the planet. Just as mothers nurture life, trees provide nourishment, protection, and hope for future generations. Through this initiative, individuals can create lasting tributes to their mothers while supporting urgent environmental needs.
