It is learnt that dozens of people in the Union Territory were hospitalised with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea in the last few days.

The affected areas include Govindasalai in Orleanpet, Nellithope, and Shaktinagar, where residents have raised concerns over polluted water supplies, India Today reported.

Political parties and civil society groups have taken to the streets since September 10, demanding accountability from the AINRC-led government.

Opposition parties, including the DMK and AIADMK, staged separate demonstrations, holding up water bottles collected from the affected neighbourhoods. Protesters also attempted to march towards the Public Works Department (PWD) office, accusing the administration of gross negligence.

According to the India Today report, Opposition Party leader Siva criticised the Puducherry government for its inaction following the deaths linked to suspected water contamination. He pointed out that despite multiple fatalities and widespread illness, senior officials, including the Chief Minister, had not visited the affected residents. Highlighting existing health concerns like kidney-related issues in the region, he demanded urgent measures to supply clean drinking water and compensation for the bereaved families.

Residents of Shaktinagar who were hospitalised alleged that contaminated water caused widespread illness, including fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Despite protests and over 40 hospital admissions, they expressed frustration over the government’s lack of response and the Chief Minister’s absence, the report mentioned.

Social activist Jose Charles, who offered assistance of Rs 1 Lakh to the grieving families, alleged that no postmortem had been conducted to establish the cause of death.

As a temporary measure, the UT government has supplied mineral water in the affected areas and launched an investigation into the matter.
