‘Do Dadagiri At Home…’: Amit Shah’s ‘GST-Festive Season’ Shopping Pitch To Indian Women

Making a pitch for the new GST regime, Union Home Minister Amit Shah asked women in Delhi to shop more this festive season.

Shah said Diwali and Navratri were not too far, and their festive shopping would coincide with the new rates for the goods and services tax (GST) that will be enforced from September 22.

Directly addressing “mothers and sisters” of Delhi, he said they should become “dominant” in their households to enjoy the new GST rates, which will drastically reduce the prices of household essentials as well as textiles and apparel.

“People of Delhi, Diwali and Navratri will be coming soon. Everything you use will now have a GST of 0% and 5% instead of 28% and 18%. I want to tell the mothers and sisters of Delhi to do dadagiri (boss around) at home and start shopping more and more from September 22…” Shah said during the inauguration and foundation-laying of various projects in New Delhi on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on Wednesday (September 17).

The Union minister, however, had a piece of advice for shoppers. He said while people should “shop freely” as the new GST rates set in during the festive season, they should ensure that they go swadeshi in their purchases.

Promoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for all things swadeshi, he urged Indians to “only buy things made in India” for the upcoming festive season.

Shah further said people should “shop freely” but every citizen should take a pledge to only buy made-in-India products. 

“Shop freely, but only buy things made in India, not outside. The time has come for every citizen of India to take a pledge to buy only what is made in our country. Promoting Swadeshi should become our nature. Only then will the resolution of a prosperous India be fulfilled,” he said.
