Tata Altroz has received a five-star rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), Union minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday, calling it “the only CNG-powered car to achieve this top safety rating”. The premium hatchback scored 29.65/32 in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 44.90/49 in Child Occupant Protection (COP).

The Bharat NCAP rating provides safety ratings for vehicles based on rigorous crash testing and evaluation criteria. The five-star rating reflects strong crash protection and advanced safety assists, including electronic stability controls, pedestrian protection, side-impact head protection, and seat-belt reminders.

In a post on X on Thursday, Gadkari congratulated the company, saying that milestones like these will inspire more automakers to place greater emphasis on safety, sustainability, and global competitiveness for a safer and greener future.

In a statement, Tata Motors said that it is the only premium hatchback in India to offer petrol, diesel, and CNG powertrains.

“It has also made history by becoming the first car in its segment and body style to achieve the highest 5-star safety rating under the Bharat NCAP protocol across all its powertrains. Furthermore, it is the only CNG-powered car to secure the highest safety rating,” they said.

As per the official record, there are 22 cars listed with various ratings under the NCAP. Only two cars have scored full marks in AOP—Mahindra XEV 9e and Tata Harrier.ev. Mahindra BE 6 scored 31.97 out of 32 while Tata Punch.ev scored 31.46.

No car has received a perfect 49/49 in COP. Seven cars have scored highest, achieving 45 out of 49 in COP—Mahindra XEV 9e, Mahindra BE 6, Tata Harrier.ev, Toyota Innova Hycross, Tata Punch.ev, Mahindra Thar Roxx and Skoda Kylaq.

Launched in October, 2023, the NCAP is for cars manufactured in India as well as imported ones. The cars are given star ratings based on their performance in crash tests.

Introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the aim was to have automobiles of higher rating so that the number of deaths in road accidents can be reduced significantly.

Two of Tata’s cars, Punch.ev and Nexon.ev, became the first five-star Bharat NCAP-rated electric vehicles in the Indian automotive market.

With Altroz joining the growing list of five-star cars, safety is increasingly becoming a key selling point in India’s auto market, pushing manufacturers to compete not just on price and features but also on crash performance.
