Coriander is one of the most essential ingredients in Indian cooking. Whether it’s curries, dals, or chutneys, dishes feel incomplete without its fresh flavour. However, storing coriander in bulk is difficult as the leaves dry out or spoil quickly.

The best solution is to grow coriander at home, which is simple, fun, and requires very little effort. Whether in a pot, grow bag, or directly in the soil, anyone can easily cultivate coriander. Here’s a step-by-step guide.

Prepare the materials

You’ll need coriander seeds (whole coriander), a pot or grow bag (8 to 10 inches deep), soil mix (garden soil + compost + cocopeat), and a spray bottle or mug for watering.

Seed preparation

Lightly crush the coriander seeds so they split into two parts. Soak them in water for 4–6 hours to speed up germination.

Sowing

Fill the pot with soil and moisten it slightly. Spread the seeds evenly on the surface and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Avoid pressing too deep, as this can slow germination.

Watering

Water lightly every day but ensure the soil doesn’t become waterlogged. Using a spray bottle works best to keep the soil moist.

Sunlight and care

Keep the pot in a spot that receives 4 to 5 hours of sunlight daily. Sprouts will begin appearing in 7 to 10 days. Once the plants reach 3 to 4 inches in height, add light fertiliser like vermicompost.

Harvesting

Coriander leaves are ready to harvest within 25 to 30 days. Cut the leaves from the top but avoid removing the roots so that fresh leaves continue to grow.

Coriander grows well in both summer and winter. By sowing fresh seeds every 15 days, you can enjoy a continuous supply of fresh coriander throughout the year.
