If asked which items of clothing stay in closest contact with our bodies, the answer would undoubtedly be undergarments. Unlike outerwear, innerwear is directly exposed to sweat, bacteria, dead skin cells, and odour. While most people wash them regularly, science says that’s not enough.

According to researchers and health professionals, undergarments are not meant to last forever, even if they appear clean and undamaged.

Undergarments Have A Shelf Life

Experts recommend replacing undergarments every 6 to 12 months. Over time, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, even with daily washing.

Wearing old or poorly cleaned innerwear can lead to skin irritation, infection, itching, and various hygiene issues. So, for the sake of your health, regular washing and timely replacement are both essential.

Why Daily Washing Isn’t Always Enough

Despite frequent cleaning, microscopic holes naturally form in the fabric’s fibres. These tiny openings trap bacteria, fungi, dead skin cells, and bodily fluids, which cannot always be completely eliminated through washing.

This build-up is not only unhygienic but can also cause persistent odour and increase the risk of skin infections or allergies.

5 Signs That Say It’s Time To Ditch Old Undergarments

Your underwear may actually be telling you it’s time for a change. Watch out for these five signs:

  1. Loss of elasticity: If it’s loose, slipping, or no longer offers proper support, especially for sports bras, it’s time to replace it.
  2. Fabric thinning or small holes: These areas trap bacteria and are difficult to clean effectively.
  3. Stubborn stains: Blood or bodily fluid stains that won’t wash out may harbour bacteria.
  4. Persistent bad odour: A lingering smell, even after washing, indicates bacterial build-up.
  5. Faded colour: A clear sign of fabric degradation.

How Often Should You Change Them?

The American Academy of Dermatology advises changing undergarments daily, and more often if you sweat heavily due to exercise or heat. The Mayo Clinic also recommends changing innerwear twice a day in hot, humid, or dusty conditions.

Moisture, body heat, and friction all contribute to microbial growth. Wearing the same undergarment for more than a day can trap sweat, skin oils, and environmental contaminants, raising your risk of fungal or bacterial infections.

The Best Fabrics For Undergarments

Scientific studies suggest that natural, breathable fabrics like cotton are ideal for innerwear. Cotton helps reduce the risk of yeast and bacterial infections by keeping the skin dry and allowing airflow.

In contrast, synthetic fabrics may trap moisture, increasing the likelihood of irritation or allergies.

In Summary

  • Change undergarments every 6 to 12 months.
  • Wash daily with detergent, not just water.
  • Choose breathable fabrics like cotton.
  • Avoid wearing the same undergarments for more than one day.

Staying on top of personal hygiene might be a small habit, but it has a big impact on your health.
