‘My Son Was To Get Promotion In 6 Months’: Delhi BMW Crash Victim’s Father

Balwant Singh, father of the Finance Ministry official killed in the BMW accident in Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan, said that his son highlighted his son’s (Navjot Singh) excellent career in the Department of Economic Affairs, saying that his son was to get a promotion in six months.

He also highlighted that Navjot recently went on a tour to Spain, accompanying Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, where they attended several side meetings. They also held meetings with New Zealand, Germany, and several other countries.

“My son was a topper from the beginning. He was to be promoted after six months. He used to ride a bike very well, yet I lost him,” Balwant said as reported by NDTV.

He also revealed that Navjot was fond of riding bikes and recently got the Triumph motorbike he was riding on the tragic day.

“He used to ride a bike sometimes; his hobby was to ride bikes. Recently, I bought a Triumph bike for him. Earlier, he had a Royal Enfield. He used to ride the bike very gracefully on the road,” he added.

Navjot Singh (52), Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, succumbed to his injuries, while his wife suffered severe injuries after a BMW allegedly hit his motorcycle near Delhi Cantonment metro station on Ring Road on Sunday.

The Delhi Police arrested Gaganpreet, the woman behind the steering of the BMW involved in the crash, on Monday after an FIR was filed against her by the victim’s wife.

Police said the collision occurred around midday, when they received multiple calls about a traffic jam. On reaching the spot, officers found the BMW lying on its side and the motorcycle near the divider. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the luxury car, driven by a woman, had rammed into the motorcycle from behind. Singh was riding the bike with his wife seated behind him.

After the crash, the woman driver and her husband, who was also in the car, transported the injured couple not to the nearest facility but to Nuelife Hospital in GTB Nagar, about 20 km away, police said. Doctors later declared Singh dead, while his wife remains under treatment.

Meanwhile, in the FIR, the victim’s wife had alleged that Gaganpreet deliberately avoided taking her injured husband to the nearest hospital despite her repeated requests.

“I repeatedly requested the lady (accused) to take my husband to the nearest hospital, my husband needs immediate first aid. But she deliberately did not take my husband to the nearest hospital and instead took him to a faraway hospital known to them. My husband had to wait too long on a stretcher there,” Singh’s wife stated in her complaint.

The couple’s son, Navnoor Singh, also echoed similar sentiments, saying that his father’s life could have been saved had he been taken to a nearby hospital, rather than a facility nearly 20 km away.

Meanwhile, Gaganpreet has denied any wrongdoing in the entire incident.
