Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel on Monday administered the oath of office to three new ministers in the caretaker cabinet of Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

Karki, 73, the country’s first woman prime minister and a former chief justice, took office on Sunday after days of political turmoil.

She appointed Kulman Ghising, Rameshwor Khanal and Om Prakash Aryal as ministers later that evening.

At a ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas, the President’s Office in Maharajgunj, the three were sworn in before assuming charge of their respective ministries

Portfolios

Khanal, a former finance secretary, has been given the Finance Ministry.

Ghising, who previously led the Nepal Electricity Authority, has been entrusted with three portfolios — Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation; Physical Infrastructure and Transport; and Urban Development.

Aryal, a lawyer, will oversee the Home Ministry as well as the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

Karki was chosen to head a caretaker administration following the resignation of former prime minister KP Sharma Oli last week.

Oli stepped down after weeks of nationwide protests led by the so-called Gen Z movement against social media restrictions and corruption allegations.

The demonstrations turned violent, leaving at least 72 people dead.

The caretaker government under Karki has been tasked with overseeing new general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.
