A new generation is making its mark globally, and it is none other than Generation Z. Born between the late 1990s and early 2010s, Gen Z grew up with technology at their fingertips. Smartphones, social media, and instant communication aren’t novelties; they are essentials in their daily lives.

Now in 2025, this generation includes young adults in their late twenties and teens, influencing not just culture but also the workplace, consumer habits, and even political movements.

Recently, Gen Z grabbed attention during the Nepal unrest, where protesters aged 13 to 28 led major demonstrations. But what makes this generation unique, and why are they in the spotlight?

What Defines Generation Z Today?

Gen Z is known for being pragmatic, cautious, and digitally savvy. Unlike millennials, they approach work with a realistic mindset, aiming for stability while chasing big ambitions.

Many are now entering the workforce, shaping industries and business trends with their digital-first outlook. They are also more focused on financial security, preferring to save and invest rather than spend frivolously.

Mental health is another major concern, with many openly discussing anxiety and stress. They value personal connections, often preferring the intimate format of podcasts over flashy social media posts.

Gaming is more than a hobby for them; it is a social platform and sometimes a career path. They are keen to explore the world, but unlike previous generations, they approach travel sensibly. Health and nutrition matter, but they are wary of extreme diets.

Why Gen Z is Central to Nepal’s Unrest

The ongoing unrest in Nepal has shed light on Gen Z’s frustration with the system. The protests began when the government blocked popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter). This move not only restricted communication but also intensified existing anger toward widespread corruption and lack of economic opportunities.

The protests became violent quickly. Demonstrators set fire to the Supreme Court, parliament, and government buildings. At least 51 people lost their lives, and hundreds were injured in clashes with the police and army. The situation worsened to the point that the Nepal Army was called in to restore order.

One of the driving forces behind the protests is the growing resentment toward the “Nepo Kids”- children of politicians flaunting extravagant lifestyles while ordinary citizens struggle. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate among Nepali youth aged 15 to 24 stood at a staggering 20.8 per cent in 2024, according to the World Bank.

How Gen Z is Changing the World

Generation Z doesn’t just challenge politics; they are also reshaping industries and culture. Their digital fluency allows them to be vocal about social issues and demand transparency from brands and governments.

Their ideas about work are flexible, aiming for a balance between personal life and professional growth. AI fascinates them, but they do not blindly trust it; they want ethical use.

What We Learn

Generation Z in 2025 is a generation of contradictions. They are ambitious yet anxious, idealistic but realistic. Whether it is through political protests in Nepal or their changing consumer habits, Gen Z is rewriting the rulebook.

As they push for a fairer, more transparent world, they are setting new standards for work, culture, and activism.
