Dark chocolates are the better option because they are rich in cocoa, which is packed with flavonoids. They also contain other beneficial nutrients, such as copper, magnesium, and minerals, which have strong antioxidant properties. Additionally, the sugar and fat content in dark chocolate is much lower than that in milk chocolate.

Dr Soma Sarkar, MBBS, MD, Dermatology, co-founder, SkinBB and Lead Dermatologist, explains, “For healthy skin, a healthy mind and body, and even for heart health and better regulation, it is important to stick to dark chocolate with more than 70% cocoa.”

White chocolate, on the other hand, contains a lot of fat and sugar. Excess sugar can cause inflammation, glycation, and collagen breakdown, contributing to premature aging of the skin. Dark chocolate helps maintain skin’s elasticity because it is rich in antioxidants and flavonoids, which are essential for skin health.

Another advantage of dark chocolate is that it helps control cravings, as its slightly bitter taste reduces the tendency to overeat.

“Dark chocolate also contains mood-boosting compounds. It helps brain function by releasing endorphins and serotonin, hormones that support good mood and emotional well-being. That’s why dark chocolate can be especially beneficial when you’re feeling low, providing both immediate uplift and long-term health benefits,” signs off Dr Sarkar.

Key Takeaways:

Choose dark chocolate (70%+ cocoa) over milk or white.

Helps maintain skin elasticity and reduce aging signs.

Controls cravings and supports mood.

Rich in antioxidants and essential minerals.
