Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo extends support and gratitude to Gen Z
NEW DELHI: Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk, took a sharp swipe at the government and the ruling party on Saturday. She praised Gen Z’s role in the student protests and suggested the BJP could learn from young Indians about Hinduism, nationalism and what it truly means to be a Vishwaguru.”If anyone has shown what it means for India to be a Vishwaguru, it is our Gen Z. They have lived Sanatan Dharma, not preached it. Courage without hate. Strength without violence. Patriotism without blind obedience,” Angmo wrote on X. “Unlike many of their counterparts across the world, they have shown that you can stand firmly against injustice without burning your own country down. Maybe it’s time the Hindu nationalist party learnt a thing or two from these young Indians about Hinduism, nationalism, and what it truly means to be a Vishwaguru,” she added.

The post came hours after Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday, taking moral responsibility for the NEET-UG paper leak controversy that has shaken the country’s examination system and sparked mass student protests.
Pradhan resigns after weeks of protests
Pradhan’s resignation marks the biggest political consequence of the NEET controversy, which began after allegations of a paper leak in the nationwide medical examination held on May 3. The National Testing Agency cancelled the exam on May 12, the first full scrapping of NEET in its 13-year history, and the government referred the case to the CBI.The exam controversy soon became a major student movement, with the Cockroach Janta Party beginning protests at Jantar Mantar on June 20, demanding Pradhan’s resignation. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest and began an indefinite hunger strike on June 28.Wangchuk’s deteriorating health drew wide attention on social media and his hospitalisation further fuelled public anger. He eventually ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving written assurances from the government, but the CJP said the movement would continue until Pradhan resigned.Even as the government expanded its response, talks with the CJP remained unresolved. Opposition parties intensified their demand for Pradhan’s resignation, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi calling him “a symbol of the collapse of our education system.”Added to this were multiple instances of alleged police brutality including use of tear gas, batons, pellet guns and stones. This drew harsh criticism over the handling of non-violent protests of the students.Pradhan’s exit follows weeks of criticism over repeated exam irregularities, the handling of protests and the government’s initial response, which opponents said was too slow and dismissive.
