US ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor on Thursday said that President Donald Trump has invited India’s commerce and trade ministers to visit Washington next week for a meeting with US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer.

Speaking at his Senate confirmation hearing, Gor said the meeting is part of ongoing efforts to finalise a “hopeful deal” and noted that the US and India are “not that far apart” on reaching an agreement.

“In fact, they’re negotiating the nitty-gritty of a deal,” he told senators. “We expect more from India than we do sometimes from other nations. I do think it will get resolved over the next few weeks.”

If confirmed, 38-year-old Gor—who would be the youngest US ambassador to India—said he would work to promote trade that is fair, reciprocal, and beneficial to American workers and businesses.

“Improving US-India trade ties will not only bolster US competitiveness, but also reduce China’s economic leverage over other nations,” he said.

Gor also emphasised the strong personal relationship between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it “incredible” and key to strengthening ties.

“If you have noticed, when he has gone after other nations, he tends to go after their leaders for putting us in that position, and for the US imposing those tariffs. When the President has been critical of India, he has gone out of his way to compliment PM Modi. They have an incredible relationship,” he said.

Gor further added, “We’re not that far apart on a deal already on these tariffs… Getting India to stop buying Russian oil is a top priority for this administration.”

Trump administration had imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on Indian imports, accusing New Delhi of supporting Moscow’s war in Ukraine through its continued purchase of oil from Russia.
