Attacked while cutting fodder in a field on Monday evening, she battled the animal for nearly 30 minutes before strangling it with a strip of her sari, ultimately killing it.

The attack took place in Barkhadi village, within the Badarwas police station area of Shivpuri district. Surajiya Bai, a widow and small-scale farmer, went to the field around 5 pm on Monday to cut fodder. While bending to pick up a bundle of grass, she was suddenly attacked by a jackal. The jackal first bit her on her legs and hands repeatedly. Surajiya Bai recalled, “In that moment, I thought I was going to die.”

Courage And Survival Battle

Despite being alone, soaked in blood, and weakened, Surajiya Bai did not lose courage. She fought the jackal for about 20 minutes by holding its jaws with both hands.

Exhausted and bleeding, she tore a part of her sari, made a noose, and wrapped it around the jackal’s neck, pulling with all her strength until the jackal stopped struggling and died. She then fell unconscious.

Admitted To Hospital For Treatment

When the villagers noticed her absence in the field until late night, they began searching for her. They found her unconscious after a few hours and took her first to the Badarwas health centre and then to the Shivpuri district hospital. Her family members expressed relief when she regained consciousness after midnight. Doctors reported 18 deep wounds on her body but noted that injuries to vital areas such as the head, neck, and stomach were absent, ultimately saving her life.
