In many rural villages, traditional rituals and remedies are often followed after the birth of a child. These include practices such as massaging the baby with mustard oil or feeding them milk to build strength. However, medical experts warn that some of these customs can actually be harmful to newborns.

Doctors from the local medical college in Mirzapur, UP, have issued important advice, urging parents to exercise caution during the first six months after a baby’s birth. They recommend avoiding the application of kajal (kohl), massaging the baby excessively, or feeding them milk or water other than breast milk, as these practices may lead to complications.

Dr Aastha Bhatt, Assistant Professor and Paediatrician at the medical college, told Local18 that while some home remedies may have merit, others could pose serious health risks. She stressed the need for special care in these early days. “For babies younger than 28 days, applying kajal is strongly discouraged as it can cause eye infections”, Dr Bhatt explained. “The chemicals in kajal are very harmful and can block the tear ducts, leading to issues like watery eyes.”

Bathing And Massaging Precautions

She further advised against bathing newborns frequently, particularly during winter, as repeatedly removing their clothes and exposing them to cold can be detrimental.

The traditional practice of massaging babies with mustard oil at home was also addressed. Dr Bhatt recommended using coconut oil instead, as mustard oil can be harsh on delicate skin. She cautioned that vigorous rubbing or massaging could potentially disturb the development of body parts.

The Sensitive Fontanelle Area

A particularly sensitive area, the fontanelle (the soft spot on the baby’s head), should never be massaged or tampered with, as this can adversely affect brain development and carries a risk of causing permanent damage.

Exclusive Breastfeeding For Optimal Health

Lastly, Dr Bhatt emphasised that infants under six months should be exclusively fed on their mother’s milk, and other types of milk or water should be avoided to ensure optimal health and growth.
