Continuous heavy rainfall in Mumbai turned deadly after a portion of a four-storey building collapsed onto nearby houses in the Mankhurd area, killing six people and injuring one. The victims included five children who were trapped under the debris. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday in Janata Nagar, where residents had taken shelter from the rain inside their homes. Rescue teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the fire department rushed to the site, but heavy rain and difficult conditions hampered rescue operations. Authorities fear more people may still be trapped beneath the rubble, and search efforts continue. Mumbai has been witnessing incessant rainfall over the past few days, with more than 200 mm of rain recorded in several areas within 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department had already issued a red alert for the city. Preliminary reports suggest the collapsed structure was an illegally constructed building. The tragedy has raised serious questions about civic oversight, illegal construction, and the failure to identify and remove dangerous buildings before the monsoon season.
