Parliament is set to elect a new Vice President on Tuesday, with voting scheduled between 10 am and 5 pm in the Parliament House. The election comes after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned in July 2025 citing health reasons, leaving the post vacant.

The election follows the Single Transferable Vote system among members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. To ensure transparency, the Election Commission, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, and every Parliamentary Secretary are involved in overseeing the process.

The Vice President’s salary is not separately provided; instead, as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, he receives Rs 4 lakh monthly. He is entitled to various facilities, including accommodation, medical services, travel (air, railway), office expenses, security, phone service, and pension. The pension amounts to 50% of the previous salary.

The Vice President’s tenure is five years, with the possibility of re-election. If a new officer does not take over at the end of the tenure, the current Vice President continues to serve.
