India will elect its 15th Vice President on September 9, with members of both Houses of Parliament casting their votes in a high-stakes contest after the abrupt resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, citing health reasons.

According to Rajya Sabha Secretary-General PC Mody, who is the returning officer, polling will be held in Room No. F-101, Vasudha, Parliament House, between 10 am and 5 pm. The ruling NDA has nominated former Tamil Nadu BJP president CP Radhakrishnan, while the Opposition has fielded senior advocate B Sudarshan Reddy.

This is the first time both candidates in a vice-presidential election are from southern India, Radhakrishnan from Tamil Nadu and Reddy from Telangana, putting regional parties in a delicate position.

PM Modi To Visit Himachal Pradesh, Punjab

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister also said that he was leaving for Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to review the situation in the wake of floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in the last few weeks. “The Government of India stands shoulder to shoulder with those affected in this tragic hour,” he said.

PM Modi will first arrive in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, at around 1:30 pm, where he will reportedly conduct an aerial survey of the most affected areas. He is also expected to chair a high-level meeting with NDRF, SDRF and Aapda Mitra teams in Dharamshala and interact with flood victims.

Then, the Prime Minister will conduct an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas in Punjab around 3 pm. He will arrive at Gurdaspur around 4:15 pm, where he will hold discussions with senior officials and chair a review meeting on the ground situation.

The ongoing monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh has claimed 370 lives so far, with 205 fatalities linked to rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, lightning strikes, electrocution, and other disaster-related causes. A total of 51 people have been killed in Punjab, as the state is experiencing one of its worst flood disasters in decades.
