Festive dressing has always been more than putting together an outfit, it is an expression of tradition meeting modernity, grace merging with glamour, and heritage evolving into individuality. As designer Maheka Mirpuri notes, “Festive dressing is an art, a dialogue between tradition and modernity, grace and glamour, heritage and individuality. At its heart lies the pursuit of balance, for true celebration is not just about what we wear, but how it makes us feel powerful yet feminine, radiant yet effortless.”

Drapes That Empower

The essence of Indian festive wear begins with draping. A saree that cascades with drama, a lehenga that carries grandeur, or a contemporary silhouette that flows with ease, each is more than just fabric. “Fabric, when sculpted with intention, becomes more than material; it becomes movement, poetry, and presence,” says Mirpuri. Each drape is thus an extension of the woman herself, balancing structure and fluidity.

Designer Nikhil Thampi echoes this sentiment but frames it in the lens of today’s younger generation. “This festive season, I see the younger generation leaning into what I call maximalist minimalism, a space where clean silhouettes meet unapologetic glamour,” he explains. A striking example is the White Pre-Draped Sari paired with a Gold Embellished Corset: “The corset is the statement, the drape is pared back, together creating a look that works as beautifully for a cocktail evening as it does for a wedding sangeet.”

Details That Enchant

If draping is the soul, details are the heartbeat. “Embroidery, beadwork, and motifs are not mere ornamentation; they are stories written in thread and sparkle,” says Mirpuri. Sequins, metallic glimmers, and heritage motifs carry meaning beyond decoration, they embody intention and identity.

Thampi’s collections echo this philosophy, though reinterpreted for versatility. His White-Gold Net Anarkali from the GLEAM Collection brings together ethereal fluidity with structured embellishment. “It’s that balance Gen Z and millennials love, dreamy yet bold, and perfect for any festive wardrobe,” he shares. For those who want drama, his Black Pre-Draped Diamond String Sari or the Gold Embellished String Sari create sleek, striking statements, styled best with sculptural earrings or a slick bun.

The Eternal Glow of Gold

No festive look feels complete without the warmth and radiance of gold. “Gold is not confined to embellishment, it is radiance itself,” Mirpuri affirms. “A subtle sheen that frames the neckline, a bold flourish that crowns the borders, or a luminous glow that envelops the entire garment, gold transforms attire into experience.”

For Thampi, too, gold remains the unifying thread. “Through every piece, gold elevates, illuminates, and celebrates,” he says. Whether in the earthy glamour of the Brown Georgette Kundan Draped Sari, the rusty red Beaded Halter Lehenga Set from his NAIA Collection, or the statement One-Shoulder Kaftan Set, gold is what ties it all together. Even for men, Thampi’s Brown Metallic Bead Embroidery Bandhgala from NAIA exemplifies modern heirloom dressing: tailored, understated in silhouette, yet maximal in impact.

Dressing Beyond the Outfit

Ultimately, festive dressing is not just about garments, it is about radiance, confidence, and presence. As Mirpuri beautifully sums it up, “To complete a festive look, one must look beyond clothing. Drapes that empower, details that enchant, and the glow of gold that endures together they define not only the essence of festive dressing, but also the woman who wears it: modern yet rooted, graceful yet commanding, timeless yet alive in the present.”

For Thampi, the definition crystallises as “powerful simplicity, designed to glow.” His approach ensures that each outfit moves with you, adapts seamlessly from day to night, and allows space for individuality through styling.

This festive season, whether you lean towards Mirpuri’s timeless drapes and intricacies or Thampi’s modern maximalist minimalism, one thing is clear: the glow of gold, in every form, remains eternal.
