A man from India was arrested in Washington, DC, by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for overstaying his visa. In a strong social media post, the agency called the man an “illegal alien” and said he would be deported. CBP’s post stressed its tough stance against people who misuse the visa system.

“While making D.C. safe, CBP arrested an Indian illegal alien who overstayed his visa. We will not tolerate people scamming the system and abusing our visa regulations. He’s going back!” the agency wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The post did not share the man’s name, age, when he entered the US, or how long he had overstayed. It also didn’t reveal when the deportation would happen.

US Customs is using social media to highlight arrests amid heated immigration debates

This arrest comes as the US immigration debate heats up. CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have been posting more often on social media about arrests and removals of undocumented immigrants. These posts are part of a strategy to show their active role in enforcing immigration rules.

Earlier, CBP shared a post of a migrant arrested in New York, wearing an American flag T-shirt. They joked, “Nice shirt! But it doesn’t erase the fact that you entered the country illegally,” adding: “Criminal illegal aliens have no place in the US.”

More recently, they posted a photo of another immigrant, writing: “The face you make when CBP shows up.” The caption explained, “CBP officers in our nation’s capital arrested an individual from El Salvador with a final removal order. Ignoring a lawful order doesn’t make it disappear; sooner or later, we will find you.”

Visa overstays are a major reason for undocumented immigrants in the US

Many undocumented immigrants in the United States initially entered legally but stayed beyond their allowed time.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, hundreds of thousands of people each year remain in the US after their visa expires. US law defines a visa overstay as “a non-immigrant who was lawfully admitted to the United States for an authorized period but stayed in the United States beyond their authorized admission period.”

Authorities emphasise that visa overstays are a violation of immigration rules and are subject to removal.

As the investigation continues, CBP is calling on the public to help by providing any information related to such cases. Meanwhile, these social media posts continue to stir discussions about how the US handles immigration and border security.
