Chennai’s changing palate: affordable indulgence for the next generation

Chennai’s dining landscape is evolving rapidly, with Gen Z shaping the way the city eats. Two brands Scoop Dawg and MAPO Hakka Chinese are at the forefront of this change, blending nostalgia with innovation while keeping food affordable and experience-driven.

Scoop Dawg is leading what founder Chef Shriram Rajendran calls Chennai’s “frozen-forward movement.” With a playful, Gen Z-first identity, the brand offers everything frozen from creamy ice creams and artisanal gelatos to popsicles, sundaes, and their signature “drool bowls.” For Rajendran, frozen is more than a category; it’s an experience. “Scoop Dawg is leading Chennai’s frozen-forward movement. We’re a Gen Z brand that makes anything and everything frozen… For us, frozen isn’t just a category, it’s an experience, fun, bold, and built for the next generation,” he says.

On the other end of the spectrum is MAPO Hakka Chinese, tapping into the city’s undying love for Indo-Chinese flavors. From steaming momos to fiery gravies and pocket-friendly combos, the brand is designed to be both authentic and accessible. Rajendran explains, “At MAPO, we wanted to bring authentic yet accessible Hakka Chinese flavors to Chennai. The city has always loved Indo-Chinese food, and we’ve elevated that with signature momos, fiery gravies, and curated combos that are high on flavor but easy on the pocket.”

Together, these two ventures reflect what Chennai’s young diners crave today: flexibility, flavor, affordability, and fun. Whether it’s cooling off with frozen treats or diving into comforting plates of Hakka Chinese, the focus is on experiences that feel personal and shareable.

As Chennai’s food scene continues to expand, brands like Scoop Dawg and MAPO are showing that the future of dining lies in embracing both innovation and nostalgia with a bold, Gen Z twist.
