A man, alleged to be the mastermind behind a honey trap and extortion racket targeting wealthy businessmen, was denied bail by the sessions court in Faridabad.

Mukesh Kumar, the main accused in the case, allegedly lured men into compromising situations and then falsely implicated them in rape cases to extort large sums of money.

The order was passed by additional district and sessions judge Jyoti Lamba, who highlighted the seriousness of the allegations and public interest in ensuring accountability for such crimes.

“The accused appears to be the mastermind of the honey trap gang(s), indulged in falsely implicating rich men in rape cases. Grant of bail at this stage would shake public confidence in the justice system,” the court observed, noting that Mukesh Kumar appeared to have orchestrated the network of honey trap gangs.

According to the prosecution, a businessman lodged a complaint alleging that he had been trapped in a false rape case and extorted of Rs 33 lakh. A probe revealed that the accused, along with associates, had allegedly devised a systematic modus operandi: women were used to establish contact with affluent individuals, lead them into compromising circumstances, and, subsequently, threaten legal action under false charges unless money was paid.

The police reportedly collected evidence suggesting that Mukesh played a central role in planning and executing the scheme. It was alleged that he coordinated with several women and associates, who acted as front-line perpetrators while he controlled the extortion network and benefited from the proceeds.

Opposing his bail plea, the prosecution argued that releasing him at this stage will pose a serious risk of witness tampering and derail the ongoing investigation. The counsel stressed that such offences have far-reaching consequences, not only tarnishing the reputation of victims but also undermining faith in the criminal justice system by misusing sensitive provisions of law meant to protect genuine victims of sexual assault.

The defence contended that Kumar was being falsely implicated and had no direct involvement in the alleged extortion. They argued that the case was based on exaggerated claims and that continued custody will cause undue hardship.

The court, however, was not persuaded by the submissions of the defence. In a detailed order, judge Lamba stressed on the gravity of the allegations and the scale of the racket.

She said prima facie material on record indicated the role of the accused as the mastermind, which necessitated continued custody to ensure a fair trial. The court further noted that granting bail in such cases could embolden similar rackets and erode public trust in the judicial process.
