‘Amazing 8-10 years together, 20 titles, world number 1’: Daniil Medvedev parts ways with longtime coach Gilles Cervara

Daniil Medvedev expresses gratitude to longtime coach Gilles Cervara after parting ways with him following yet another Round 1 loss at a Grand Slam, this time at the US Open 2025.

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has announced a split with his longtime coach, Gilles Cervara, following a dramatic exit from the US Open 2025 Round 1. Cervara’s stint as Medvedev’s coach lasted a total of eight years. The partnership’s biggest highlight was Medvedev’s US Open win in 2021 and attaining the World No.1 ranking.

Both Medvedev and Cervara released separate statements to express gratitude for each other and wished each other all the best for their future endeavours.

Cervara’s message for Medvedev

Cervera took to social media platform Instagram to share an update that read, “Daniil, our fantastic eight-season adventure together comes to an end.”

“Like a symbolic wink of life, it’s after this US Open tournament that we end our collaboration. I am grateful and happy for all the great things and wonderful experiences we were able to experience together on the court during these eight years,”

“It will remain etched in my memory forever. I thank you for placing your trust in me. I gave EVERYTHING, every second, for our shared goals. I loved training you, coaching you, supporting you (even when it was difficult), and finding solutions with you and the team to help you perform. I will keep in mind your unconventional magic as a player, which is your strength,”

“It will return, I’m sure. I wish you all the success you aspire to as a player in the future. And a happy life as a man. The road continues, work and performance call to each of us…and I wish us both success. A presto Daniil!”

“I also want to mention and send special thoughts to all the people on the team who were part of this story. Sorry I’ve written a word for all of you but it doesn’t fit in it’s too long, DASHA OLIVER YANN ERIC FRANCISCA GAETAN MATHIEU CARL PAUL GAËL BENOÎT,” he concluded.

Medvedev also took to Instagram to share the news and thank the Frenchman for his efforts.

“Thank you Gilles,” said Medvedev.

“Amazing 8-10 years together, 20 titles, world number 1 but most importantly a lot of fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever.

“I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future.”

The split does not come as a surprise, as Medvedev has suffered a rapid decline on the court. He had a terrible 2025 season, where he passed the Round 1 stage of the Grand Slam only once. It will be interesting to see who the Russian will appoint as his new coach.
