Ramanand Sagar’s son, Prem Sagar passes away

Ramanand Sagar's son, cinematogapher, director Prem Sagar passes away, the industry mourns his loss

Prem Sagar, veteran producer–cinematographer and son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, passed away today (Sunday) at 10 AM. The film and television fraternity is mourning his loss. He carried forward the Sagar family’s legacy in Indian entertainment as a respected producer and visual craftsman. An alumnus of FTII, Pune (1968 batch), he built a strong technical base in photography and cinematography. Apart from producing some iconic projects for television, he was also a cinematographer for many movies and had turned to direction as well. As the son of Ramanand Sagar, who created the iconic TV series ‘Ramayan’, Prem Sagar grew up in an environment surrounded by stories, cinema, and devotion. While his father became a household name, Prem preferred to stay behind the camera, shaping visuals and production in his quiet, committed way.Apart from spearheading television shows like ‘Vikram Aur Betaal’, ‘Ramayan’, ‘Shri Krishna’, he also worked as a cinematographer in movies like ‘Lalkar’, ‘Aankhen’ and ‘Charas’ which starred Dharmendra and Hema Malini. Prem also directed and produced Jeetendra and Hema Malini starrer ‘Hum Tere Aashiq Hai’. The industry mourns his loss. Colleagues remember him as soft-spoken, dedicated, and meticulous. Though he preferred to stay behind the camera, his work left a lasting impact on generations of viewers. Actor Sunil Lahiri who had worked in ‘Ramayan’ as Laxman, expressed grief as he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Absolutely shocking news we lost Prem Sagar Ji son of Ramanand Sagar ji of Ramayan Om Shanti 🙏😥 He is survived by his son, producer Shiv Sagar. His passing marks the end of a vital link between the golden years of Ramanand Sagar’s productions and today’s evolving television landscape.
