ELECTION UPDATE: EC takes cognizance after Kumarganj attack on BJP candidate during voting

A serious incident has been reported from Kumarganj assembly constituency in South Dinajpur district of West Bengal during ongoing polling, where a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate was allegedly attacked by a group of people while visiting the area. According to ground inputs, the situation escalated after a heated exchange between the candidate and local residents, which soon turned into a physical confrontation. The candidate was seen being escorted by security personnel as attempts were made to move him away from the crowd. However, the situation intensified further as the crowd allegedly surrounded him, leading to pushing and chaos on the spot. Following the incident, election authorities have taken cognizance of the matter and sought detailed reports from district administration officials regarding the sequence of events. The Election Commission has also asked for a comprehensive assessment of the situation, including identification of individuals involved and the circumstances that led to the confrontation. Authorities are expected to review video footage and other evidence collected from the area to verify the claims and ensure accountability. The incident has been placed under strict observation as part of the broader monitoring of polling day security across sensitive constituencies in the state. Despite the clash, polling has continued in the constituency under tight security arrangements, with officials confirming voting is taking place peacefully in most booths. Additional forces have been deployed in sensitive pockets to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation. Election officials reiterated democratic process remains unaffected and voter participation continues across region. Authorities closely monitoring situation as polling progresses throughout day today.
