ELECTION UPDATE: BJP candidate attacked in Kumarganj during polling in South Dinajpur

A major incident has been reported from Kumarganj assembly constituency in South Dinajpur district of West Bengal, where the BJP candidate was allegedly attacked amid ongoing polling. According to ground reports, the candidate, identified as Shubhendu Sarkar, faced a hostile situation while visiting the area during voting hours. The incident reportedly began with a heated exchange between the candidate and a group of local residents, which escalated into a physical confrontation. Security personnel accompanying the candidate immediately intervened and attempted to escort him to a safer location as the situation turned tense. Visuals from the spot indicate that the candidate was surrounded by a crowd, and in the process of escalation, there were attempts to push and assault him, prompting swift action by security forces to prevent further escalation. The candidate was eventually moved away from the immediate location under police protection. Authorities have deployed additional security in the area to ensure that polling continues without disruption. Officials on the ground confirmed that voting activity has not been halted and polling is proceeding across booths in the constituency under tight security arrangements. The administration has begun reviewing the incident and gathering details, including possible video evidence, to identify those involved in the clash. This development comes amid reports of heightened tension in certain pockets of West Bengal during the first phase of voting, where sporadic clashes and political confrontations have been observed. Despite these isolated incidents, election officials maintain that overall polling remains largely peaceful, with voters continuing to participate in significant numbers across the state under close monitoring by security forces and election authorities throughout the day today.
