ELECTION UPDATE: BJP candidate alleges attack during booth visit in Kumarganj, tension rises

A political confrontation has been reported from Kumarganj assembly constituency in South Dinajpur district of West Bengal during ongoing polling, where a BJP candidate alleged that he was attacked while inspecting multiple polling booths in the area. According to the candidate’s statement, incidents of tension were first observed at several booths where polling agents were reportedly removed, following which he intervened and facilitated their re-entry to ensure polling continued smoothly. The candidate further claimed that while conducting a ground-level inspection of nearly two dozen booths, he and his security team were surrounded by a group of people, leading to a situation of chaos and physical confrontation. He stated that the environment was deliberately made tense and that attempts were made to create fear among voters and polling representatives present at the location. He also alleged that central security forces were not visibly present at the exact moment of the incident, although officials were stationed inside polling premises. The candidate described the situation as one of intimidation and claimed that political opponents were reacting out of fear of electoral defeat in the region. Following the incident, the candidate addressed media persons and reiterated that voter participation should not be obstructed under any circumstances. He alleged that attempts were being made to prevent voters from entering polling stations and that his visit was intended to ensure free and fair voting in the constituency. Election authorities have not issued a detailed statement yet, but polling continues across the constituency under security arrangements. Officials are expected to review the incident and verify details through ground reports and available footage as voting progresses across West Bengal during the first phase of elections.
