A 28-year-old man in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district allegedly murdered his mother with an axe, leaving her body mutilated beyond recognition and then sat beside the corpse for hours singing songs and threatening anyone who came near.

The accused, identified as Jeet Ram Yadav, attacked his 59-year-old mother, Gulabi, with an axe at around 5 am on Tuesday in Bendrerbhadra settlement under Kunkuri police limits. Witnesses told police that Jeet Ram Yadav struck her repeatedly until she died on the spot.

Neighbours, shocked at the brutality, saw Jeet Ram Yadav sitting just metres away from the butchered body, humming songs in anger and playing with sand. Terrified residents quickly alerted the police but did not dare intervene as Jeet Ram Yadav swung the axe at anyone who tried to approach.

By the time police arrived, hundreds of locals had gathered outside the house. However, Jeet Ram Yadav grew increasingly violent, even attempting to attack officers when they moved closer.

Jashpur Superintendent of Police Shashimohan Singh said, “It took nearly four hours of negotiation and tactical effort before he could be overpowered and taken into custody.”

The motive for the attack is still unclear, police said, adding, “Prima facie, it appears that the accused is mentally unstable but investigations are ongoing.”

Police have sent the body for post-mortem and registered a case of murder.
