In a dramatic operation, Gujarat’s CID Crime branch nabbed a man trying to sell whale vomit worth Rs 3.69 crore on Dholka Highway. Acting on a tip-off, officers posed as buyers and set up a sting operation.

The accused, identified as Prashant Sureshbhai Vaghela, was caught with 3.6 kg of whale vomit (ambergris) in his car near a ceramic factory on Dholka Highway. His accomplice managed to flee and is currently on the run.

Ambergris, also called whale vomit, is a rare substance used in the production of expensive perfumes and medicines. It is highly valuable on the black market, often fetching crores for a few kilograms.

Officials revealed that fishermen along Gujarat’s coastline sometimes find ambergris during deep-sea fishing. Instead of reporting it to the government or marine police, as required by law, some illegally sell it through agents.

The seized haul highlights the growing black market trade of whale vomit in Gujarat, despite strict bans. Police have launched a manhunt for the absconding accused and are investigating the larger network behind the deal.
