For centuries, Hindus have turned to Lord Ganesha—also known as Vighneshwara, the remover of obstacles—before starting any new venture. From weddings to housewarmings, his blessings are sought first, as the scriptures say no task can be successful without his grace.

According to the Puranas, Ganesha was born on the fourth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, a day now celebrated as Vinayaka Chavithi across India. Over time, his worship transcended caste, region, and community, becoming a universal symbol of faith and spirituality.

Why Ganesha Worship Is Linked To Planetary Problems

Astrology plays a big role in traditional Hindu beliefs. Life’s ups and downs are often explained through planetary positions in one’s horoscope. Favourable alignments bring success and happiness, while malefic influences—like Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu—are believed to cause illness, debts, and mental stress.

Priests and scholars say worshipping Ganesha in specific ways can help reduce these planetary effects.

For Shani (Saturn): Offer Garika grass to Ganesha daily or especially on Vinayaka Chavithi.

For Rahu Dosha: Worship a clay idol of Ganapati.

For Ketu Dosha: Use white ‘jilledu’ (Calotropis) flowers during the puja.

Different Forms Of Ganesha For Different Needs

Beyond planetary troubles, certain forms of Ganesha are believed to help with specific problems:

  • Red Sandalwood Ganesha for relief from illness
  • Pagadam (Emerald) Ganesha for freedom from debts
  • Marble Ganesha for peace of mind
  • Swetarka Ganesha for overall well-being and problem resolution

How To Perform The Puja

On Vinayaka Chavithi, devotees wake up early, clean their homes, prepare offerings, and set up a puja mandapam with fruits, leaves, flowers, and sweets for Lord Ganesha. Many also observe a fast for the day, as it is believed to bring greater spiritual benefits.

Priests say the festival is not only about rituals but also about faith, devotion, and seeking positive change in life. Proper worship, they believe, brings peace, prosperity, and protection from life’s obstacles.
