Two teachers in a private school in Kerala’s Kadavallur, Thrissur, were suspended for allegedly urging Muslim students to refrain from taking part in Onam celebrations.

The incident took place in Sirajul Uloom English High School in the village, where a teacher, Khadija, posted a voice message in a WhatsApp group related to the school, saying that there is no need for Onam celebration at school as it is a festival of “another religion”.

The management of the school said that whatever she said was her personal opinion and not that of the school management.

“As like every year, the school management has decided to conduct the Onam celebration in a grand manner this year. We had sent messages regarding it to class groups and PTA groups. As part of the investigation, we have suspended the teachers involved in it”, the management said in a statement.

There were two audios sent by two teachers; however, the case was registered only against one.

“We Muslims should live by adhering to Islam. Onam celebrations are polytheistic and should not be encouraged. Neither we nor our children should encourage Onam celebrations in any way. Joining in with the customs of people of other religions may turn into ‘shirk’,” she was heard saying in the recording, India Today reported.

She added that children should be raised in an Islamic culture and must be kept away from the rituals of other religions.

“Our children are very young so they should be taught the seriousness of taking part in such celebrations. For this Onam, neither we nor our children are taking part,” she said.

She was booked for alleged hate remarks based on a complaint of the Democratic Youth Federation of India.
