A 16-year-old boy allegedly ran over a pedestrian and dragged him for nearly 600 meters in Delhi’s Samaypur Badli area, said officials on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on August 23 near a PVC pipe factory when the minor, driving a Hyundai i10 at high speed, struck a pedestrian and dragged him along the road, police said.

An eyewitness, who was cycling nearby, tried to stop the teenager by signalling him, but the boy did not slow down.

According to Delhi Police, the victim, identified as 32-year-old Sujeet Mandal, was rushed to the hospital by locals but succumbed to his injuries.

He was declared dead at Burari Hospital.

The accused was traced and apprehended within six hours with the help of CCTV footage, mobile tracking, and the vehicle’s registration number.

“He has been booked for culpable homicide and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB),” an officer said, adding that further investigation is underway.

According to a report, India witnessed 67,387 hit-and-run incidents in 2022, resulting in the loss of 30,486 lives, making for approximately four fatalities per hour.

According to NCRB data over the 2018–2022 period, hit-and-runs claimed roughly 245,000 lives, yet just 33,212 cases led to convictions, highlighting an alarmingly low conviction rate.

These crash survivors also represent around 18 per cent of all roadway deaths, underscoring a pressing public safety crisis.
