Antarctica21 unveils Magellan Discoverer, the Americas’ first hybrid-electric expedition Ship

Antarctica21 has announced the launch of Magellan Discoverer, the first hybrid-electric expedition cruise ship constructed in the Americas. Purpose-built in Chile for the company’s pioneering air-cruise model, the vessel will begin operations during the 2026–27 Antarctic season, with advance bookings available through 2028.

At 94 metres in length, Magellan Discoverer will accommodate 76 guests across three passenger decks, supported by 67 crew members – preserving Antarctica21’s hallmark of small-group, high-service expedition experiences. The ship’s hybrid-electric propulsion system integrates marine batteries with IMO Tier III-compliant engines, significantly lowering COâ‚‚ emissions and underwater noise while enhancing fuel efficiency. Recovered engine heat is repurposed for onboard heating, and energy recovery systems further optimise performance. Built to Polar Class 6 standards, the vessel is designed for safe and environmentally responsible navigation in Antarctic waters.

The ship features 40 cabins – including Grand Veranda Suites, Family Suites, Deluxe Veranda Cabins and Single Veranda Cabins – all with private balconies. Interiors by Tomas Tillberg Design reflect a modern aesthetic inspired by Patagonia and Antarctica, complemented by observation lounges, a gym, sauna and dining areas.

The addition of Magellan Discoverer expands Antarctica21’s fleet alongside Magellan Explorer, increasing capacity for its signature air-cruise expeditions. Passengers fly from Punta Arenas directly to King George Island, bypassing the Drake Passage and maximising time on the continent – a concept increasingly popular among Indian and Asian travellers seeking efficient, comfort-focused exploration.

“Magellan Discoverer reflects our long-standing focus on small-scale, responsible Antarctic travel,” said Juan Cristóbal Del Pedregal Bravo, Senior Commercial Director, Antarctica21. “The hybrid-electric technology supports our environmental commitments, while the boutique size ensures flexibility and a personalised experience. With bookings now open for the 2026–27 season, we look forward to working closely with our partners in India as interest in expedition travel continues to grow.”

Antarctica21 remains CarbonNeutral certified and continues to invest in sustainability initiatives, including renewable energy at its Explorers House in Punta Arenas and the testing of synthetic e-Fuels for Zodiac operations. The launch of Magellan Discoverer reinforces the company’s commitment to combining innovation with low-impact exploration in Antarctica.
