When Rajpal said we shouldn’t raise fingers at anyone’s creativity

When Rajpal Yadav said we shouldn’t raise fingers at anyone’s creativity amid ‘Ata Pata Laapata’ phase

Rajpal Yadav has always embraced every shade of cinema. From intense roles to slapstick humour, he has done it all. Yet audiences cherish him most for his comic timing. In a throwback interview during the release of ‘Ata Pata Laapata,’ Rajpal spoke about creativity, cinema trends and respecting artistic freedom.

A desi Broadway and his take on creativity

While promoting ‘Ata Pata Laapata’, Rajpal described the film as experimental and bold. He said, “This film is a musical satire. Ye aaj kal ki sacchai hai. We’re trying to entertain people as well as give a message through this film.”He added, “I would describe this movie as a musical chaos. It is a desi Broadway. We have narrated the entire story through songs and dance.”He stepped out of his comfort zone for the project, dancing on screen and performing in a quirky avatar. When asked about item songs and changing comedy trends, he responded with clarity. He said, “Desh badal gaya hai. Sabka entertainment ka apna apna tarika hota hai and kisi ki creativity pe ungli nahi uthai ja sakti.” He believed every creator has their own voice and chose respect over criticism.

The legal storm that followed

Behind that confident smile, trouble was brewing. The film later became linked to financial strain. Rajpal had taken a loan to back the project, but the movie did not perform as expected, and repayment issues surfaced. The matter reached court. In 2018, a magistrate’s court convicted him and his wife in a cheque bounce case. Over time, the dues reportedly rose to nearly Rs 9 crore. Although he cleared part of the amount, including Rs 75 lakh in 2025, delays continued. On February 4, 2026, the court rejected his final request for more time and directed him to surrender at Tihar Jail. Before surrendering, he reportedly broke down and said, “Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”

When the industry stood by him

Amid the crisis, members of the film industry extended support. Sonu Sood reportedly offered him a role along with financial help. Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn also extended their backing. His manager shared, “A lot of people have reached out to help Rajpal Yadav. Actors like Sonu Sood, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn have extended their support. I was just on a call with David Dhawan — he too reached out. Ratan Jain, Varun Dhawan… many people are coming forward to help him this time, which Rajpal has deeply appreciated.”Politician Tej Pratap Yadav and others also reportedly pledged assistance, showing that even during turbulent times, support from the industry continues to surround the actor.
