Musk once called him a ‘snake’: Who is Sergio Gor, Trump’s pick for US envoy to India?

United States President Donald Trump has named Sergio Gor, one of his closest confidants, as the next American ambassador to India.

The choice comes at a moment of friction between Washington and New Delhi, with tariff disputes dominating headlines.

Gor’s nomination also carries added weight, as he has been tasked not only with managing the US mission in India but also with serving as special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs — a dual role that places him at the centre of a critical geopolitical flashpoint.

Nominating Gor, Trump described him as a long-time ally and stated his faith in Gor’s ability to advance his agenda abroad.

“Sergio is a great friend, who has been at my side for many years. He worked on my Historic Presidential Campaigns, published my Best Selling Books, and ran one of the biggest Super PACs, which supported our Movement,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

He added, “For the most populous Region in the World, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my Agenda and help us, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”

Until the Senate confirms his nomination, Gor will remain director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, a position he has held since November 2024.

In his reaction on X, Gor said the appointment would be “the honour of my life.”

His ambassadorship will fill a vacancy that has lasted for nearly seven months, since Eric Garcetti stepped down as the 26th US envoy to India.

Who is Sergio Gor?

Sergio Gor, born Sergey Gorokhovsky on November 30, 1986, in Tashkent in the former Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, had an early life shaped by multiple migrations.

His family relocated to Malta in 1994, where his mother registered as an Israeli national and ran a business. He grew up in the Maltese town of Cospicua, attending De La Salle College, a Catholic boys’ school, until the family emigrated again in 1999.

By the late 1990s, the Gorokhovsky family had settled in the United States. Gor attended high school in Los Angeles before moving to Washington, DC to study at George Washington University.

During his college years, he quickly immersed himself in American conservative politics. He was active in College Republicans and went on to found the university’s chapter of the Young America’s Foundation.

Initially enrolled under his full surname, Gorokhovsky, he later shortened it to Gor — a name under which he would build his career in Republican politics.

How did Gor become Trump’s close aide?

Gor’s political journey began with the Republican National Committee, after which he took on spokesperson roles for prominent conservative lawmakers.

He worked for Representative Steve King of Iowa, Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, and Representative Randy Forbes of Virginia, honing his communications skills and building his network in Washington.

In May 2013, he joined US Senator Rand Paul’s political action committee, RANDPAC, where his responsibilities expanded significantly.

Over the next seven years, Gor became a central figure in Paul’s team, serving at various times as spokesman, communications director, and eventually deputy chief of staff.

His tenure with Paul not only cemented his reputation within Republican circles but also positioned him for higher-profile roles once Trump rose to power.

By June 2020, Gor shifted into the Trump orbit, taking the role of chief of staff for the Trump Victory Finance Committee. The next month, he began working with Donald Trump Jr, managing publishing projects and serving as a consultant.

This collaboration led to the establishment of Winning Team Publishing in October 2021, a venture that went on to publish several books authored by or about Donald Trump, including Our Journey Together (2021), Letters to Trump (2023), and Save America (2024).

Gor also became a key player in pro-Trump political action committees. He served as a senior advisor to MAGA Inc. and later headed Right for America, both of which supported Trump’s electoral comeback.

His loyalty during Trump’s turbulent political journey played a major role in his appointment as director of the Presidential Personnel Office after Trump’s return to the White House in January this year.

What does Gor’s dual-role appointment mean for the region?

Unlike some of his predecessors, Gor will not only be handling India but will also oversee South and Central Asia as special envoy.

This includes indirect responsibility for countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, both of which are often linked to US-India strategic calculations.

For years, Washington had pursued a “de-hyphenation” policy, attempting to deal with India and Pakistan separately rather than through a single lens.

Analysts have pointed out that Gor’s dual role risks reversing that strategy, potentially drawing New Delhi into regional disputes it has resisted being associated with.

Critics argue that the US embassy in India could now become entangled in Pakistan-related matters, a prospect India has historically opposed.

South Asia analyst Michael Kugelman wrote on X, “If Gor is confirmed as ambassador to India and also serves in the special envoy role, then it would appear that India-Pakistan hyphenation is back. On the other hand, by consolidating regional strategy in the hands of a trusted Trump ally based in Delhi, the White House may be signalling that it sees India as the anchor of its South Asian approach.

Is Gor the right choice for India?

Although Gor lacks direct India experience, this is not unusual for American ambassadors to New Delhi. Such appointments have often been political in nature.

For instance, US President Joe Biden nominated Eric Garcetti, the former mayor of Los Angeles and a campaign co-chair, to serve as ambassador during his tenure.

Similarly, Gor’s selection reflects Trump’s pattern of rewarding loyalty and long-term association with critical diplomatic roles.

Gor’s deep ties to Trump could prove an asset in New Delhi, where direct access to the White House is often seen as valuable for advancing bilateral issues.

Steve Bannon, Trump’s former senior adviser during his first term, lauded Gor’s appointment saying, “I believe Sergio is the only person outside of [chief of staff] Susie [Wiles] and a handful of others who actually has walk-in privileges to the president at any time, day or night,”

“If I’m [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi in India — and I say this as somebody that’s so pro that relationship — I couldn’t think of a better pick,” Bannon told Politico in an interview.

“Does he have a deep knowledge base of the Indian policy issues? He doesn’t, but this guy’s a quick study. He not just has access to the president … but he has a unique trust. The president trusts this guy, that he’s dealing with him straight.”

His position as both ambassador and envoy may allow him to cut through bureaucratic hurdles, but it could also increase tensions if policy decisions prioritise Trump’s domestic agenda over long-term strategic considerations.

What happened when Gor and Elon Musk clashed?

While Gor is valued by Trump for his loyalty, his career has not been free of disputes. He has been known to exclude individuals deemed insufficiently committed to Trump’s agenda, a trait admired by the president but criticised by others as capricious.

One of his most prominent conflicts was with tech billionaire Elon Musk, who initially served as a senior adviser to Trump’s administration. Their relationship soured over staffing disagreements and Gor’s management style.

Musk publicly labelled Gor a “snake” and “sleazy,” accusing him of mishandling personnel decisions and failing to submit his own clearance paperwork while overseeing the vetting of thousands of government appointees.

The clash escalated when Gor informed Trump that Jared Isaacman, Musk’s nominee for Nasa administrator, had previously donated to Democrats. This revelation led Trump to withdraw Isaacman’s nomination on Musk’s final day in the White House.

A White House official later described the move as “Sergio’s out-the-door ‘f**k you’ to Musk.”

Reports also suggest Gor took personal satisfaction when Tesla stock fell.

Musk, in turn, criticised the administration’s budget as a “disgusting abomination” and publicly clashed with Trump after leaving the White House.

Beyond the Musk saga, Gor has been the subject of media scrutiny over his rapid ascent in Trump’s circle and his role in managing publishing projects that earned Trump millions of dollars after his first presidency.

How are US-India trade disputes holding?

Washington and New Delhi are embroiled in a dispute over energy imports and trade barriers. Following India’s phased pattern that increased its purchases of Russian oil, Trump responded by imposing additional tariffs on Indian goods — first 25 per cent, then doubling them to 50 per cent.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently criticised India’s growing reliance on Russian crude, noting that such purchases accounted for 42 per cent of India’s total oil imports compared to under 1 per cent before the Ukraine war.

Bessent accused India of “profiteering” from the crisis.

India has pushed back diplomatically, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal saying the government maintains a “very open mind” about its future trade relationship with Washington.

He pointed out that the partnership remains “consequential and important” for both nations.

Yet the escalating tariffs have only been complemented with the cancellation of a planned US trade delegation visit to New Delhi in late August.

About Gor being Trump’s pick for India, an anonymous source also told Politico, “The president [Trump] is sending a powerful signal to the Modi government by sending an envoy that is very personally close to him.”

“Sergio is a clear signal that the negotiations need to be serious and that all messages come from the president.”

India and the US remain significant trading partners, with annual bilateral trade exceeding $190 billion.

Despite political disagreements, the partnership is anchored by shared democratic values and a mutual interest in countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.
