Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday took a dig at Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir over his remark comparing India’s economy to a “shining Mercedes” and Pakistan’s to a “dump truck full of gravel”.

Singh pointed out that while Munir’s statement was widely mocked, it revealed a deeper truth about the difference in progress between the two nations.

Speaking at a event, the Defence Minister said, “I consider this statement of Asim Munir as a confession. I do not consider his statement as mere troll material.”

He added that if two countries got independence at the same time, and one is now seen as a Ferrari or Mercedes while the other is still a dump truck, it shows the failure of that country’s policies and leadership.

“Everyone said that if two countries got independence at the same time and one country built a Ferrari-like economy through hard work, right policies and foresight and the other is still in a dumper state, then it is their own failure,” Singh explained.

Referring to the heavy trolling Munir faced internationally, Singh warned that such comments should not be taken lightly or ignored.

“If we do not pay attention to the historical indication behind this serious warning, then it can become a matter of concern for us. And yes, if we pay attention to this and prepare for it, then India is capable of giving a befitting reply to such warnings,” he added.

Earlier this month, Pakistan Army Chief General Munir had said, “India is shining Mercedes coming on a highway like Ferrari, but we are a dump truck full of gravel. If the truck hits the car, who is going to be the loser?”

His analogy sparked widespread criticism and ridicule, both in India and Pakistan. Many on social media mocked the comparison, questioning why the Pakistani Army Chief would liken his own country to a dump truck.

This comment came amid rising tensions between the two neighbours. On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. The operation neutralised over 100 terrorists, and cross-border firing continued for four days.
