The headless body of a girl was found in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi last week. Rachna Yadav, 35, was murdered by her lover, former Maheba village head Sanjay Patel, with help from his nephew and friend, the Uttar Pradesh police revealed.

Senior Superintendent of Police BBGTS Murthy said the murder was the result of a love affair gone wrong. Rachna had been pressuring Sanjay to marry her, but he, already married with two children, refused.

On August 9, Sanjay, his nephew Sandeep Patel, and friend Pradeep alias Deepak Ahirwar strangled Rachna, chopped her body into seven pieces, put her in sacks and dumped them in a well. The head and feet were thrown into the Lakheri river to prevent identification.

The decomposed body was discovered on August 13. Police drained the well but could not identify the head.

“We have recovered all body parts and have arrested two persons while looking for third accused. The police team has been awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000 by DIG Jhansi Range Keshav Chaudhary”, the SSP said, as per The Times Of India.

Villagers suspected it to be Rachna and informed her brother Deepak Yadav from Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh. Phone records revealed repeated calls with Sanjay. This led to a late-night raid on his house after which he confessed to the murder.

Rachna, a resident of Malwara village, had been married twice before and had two children from her first marriage. After leaving her second husband, she lived with Shivraj Yadav of Maheba.

In 2023, she had filed an FIR against Shivraj and his elder brother for dowry harassment, rape and attempted murder, according to Amar Ujala.

Shivraj died in June, after which Rachna began pressuring Sanjay for marriage.

Police arrested Sanjay and Sandeep, while Pradeep is still on the run. SSP Murthy offered a Rs 25,000 reward for Pradeep’s capture.

DIG Keshav Chaudhary gave Rs 50,000, SP RA Dr. Arvind Kumar Rs 20,000, and SSP Murthy Rs 20,000 to the police team for solving the case in seven days. The team included SWAT in-charge Jitendra Takkhar, Rajat Singh, Shailendra, Harshit, Durgesh Kumar, Rajneesh, and Atul Rajput from Todi Fatehpur police station.
