A group of Hindi-speaking traders allegedly thrashed four students of Calcutta University after they were allegedly branded as Bangladeshis. The incident took place in the Sealdah station area in north Kolkata.

According to a report by IANS, the students were beaten up for speaking Bengali on Wednesday night. An official complaint has also been filed by the students at Muchipara Police Station; however, no arrests have been made so far.

Meanwhile, the injured students were rushed to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

What Happened?

The incident took place on Wednesday night when one of the students of Calcutta University’s Carmichael Hostel went to a mobile equipment shop under the Sealdah Bridge to buy mobile covers.

A minor altercation broke out between the student and one of the sellers as the student was negotiating for the price. According to the allegation made by the student, the vendor, who was speaking in Hindi, abused him for speaking in Bengali.

The student later returned to the spot with three of his friends from the hostel. A heated argument ensued, during which the students were allegedly harassed. They claimed that several other traders also got involved in the confrontation and physically assaulted them. Following the incident, the students lodged a written complaint at Muchipara Police Station, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved.

“They said in Hindi that we are ‘Bangladeshi’. When we protested, they beat me. They took away my mobile phone. One man even attacked us with knives,” one of the students was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, speaking about the incident, a senior police officer of Kolkata Police said, “We have received a complaint in this regard. We are investigating the matter. No one has been arrested so far.”

TMC Workers Protest Over Alleged Targeting Of Bengali-Speaking Migrants

The incident comes days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that a Bengali-speaking woman and her child, who were allegedly assaulted in Delhi, were “threatened”.

Earlier in July, she shared a video on social media, alleging that a Bengali-speaking woman and her child were assaulted in the national capital for speaking their language.

TMC workers too have been holding protests in Parliament complex against the alleged targeting of Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-ruled states.
