A man who was out on bail for the murder of his brother in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich was arrested for killing his widowed sister-in-law and her three daughters by allegedly pushing them into a river with the assistance of an aide, the police said on Thursday.

The accused was identified as Anirudh Kumar, who hailed from Ramaipurva village in Bahraich. He was jailed in connection with the murder of his brother Santosh Kumar over a property dispute in 2018, ASP (Rural) Durga Prasad Tiwari said.

After getting bail a few months after the murder, he started living with his brother’s wife, Suman, 36, forcing her into a relationship.

They had two daughters – Anshika (6), and Laado (3).

Suman also had a 12-year-old daughter from her marriage to Santosh.

The woman was a key witness in her husband’s murder case, Anirudh had been forcing her to change her testimony, however, she refused.

Suman had recently moved to her mother’s house with her three daughters. On August 19, Suman’s mother, Rampata, filed a police complaint saying that Suman and the three girls had been missing since August 14. She alleged that Anirudh and one of his associates had kidnapped them with the intention of killing them.

Based on a tip-off, the police arrested Anirudh at Gayghat bridge in the Motipur area.

During interrogation, he admitted that he had called Suman and the three girls to Mihipurwa on August 14 with the help of his partner.

The officer said Anirudh took them to a bridge over the Sharda River in the Khamharia area of Lakhimpur Kheri district and pushed them into the river. The ASP added that police have recovered Suman’s and the girls’ clothes, one girl’s shoes, and the motorcycle used in the crime from nearby bushes. However, the bodies have not yet been found.

The associate is absconding and a search operation to nab him is underway, the police said.
