It has been a month since Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down from the post of Vice President of India, citing health concerns. His resignation, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu on July 21, brought an early close to his tenure, during which he had moved into the newly built Vice President’s Enclave, part of the Central Vista redevelopment. As per government protocol, a former Vice President is allowed to retain the official residence for up to 30 days after leaving office. Once this period ends, he is expected to seek an alternative arrangement through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

According to government sources, Dhankhar has so far made no formal request to the ministry or any other central department for a new residence in Delhi or elsewhere. Despite this, the Directorate of Estates, which manages government housing under the Urban Development Ministry, has already identified and vacated a property for him. The residence in question is a Type-VIII bungalow at 34, APJ Abdul Kalam Road, one of the most prominent addresses in Lutyens’ Delhi. The house was until recently occupied by former Union Minister Bhagavatar, who has since vacated it to accommodate the former Vice President.

Officials say that if Dhankhar is not keen on shifting into this particular bungalow, the ministry is ready to provide him with an alternative. This flexibility exists because former Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Prime Ministers are entitled either to an official Type-VIII bungalow in Delhi’s Lutyens’ Zone or to a plot of two acres in their native place. These provisions ensure that those who have held the nation’s highest offices are guaranteed secure accommodation post-retirement.

For Dhankhar, the move is not merely administrative but also symbolic, marking his transition from the official residence associated with the responsibilities of the Vice Presidency to a home that will now reflect his retired public life.

What Lies Ahead

Jagdeep Dhankhar’s next step will depend on whether he accepts the Type-VIII bungalow already kept aside for him or chooses a different arrangement under the rules. With his grace period at the Vice President’s Enclave having expired, he is now expected to take a call on his post-tenure residence.

As per norms, former Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Prime Ministers are allotted either a Type-8 bungalow in Lutyens’ Zone or 2 acres of land at their native place.
