Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public hearing at her camp office on Wednesday, when a middle-aged man handed her some court papers and then suddenly shouted, hurled abuses and tried to slap her, police said.

A public hearing is organised every Wednesday at the Delhi Chief Minister’s camp office on Raj Niwas Marg, beginning at 7 am, where people from across the city present their complaints and appeals directly to the CM. At around 8 am, while the Chief Minister was attending to a complainant, the accused suddenly launched an attack.

According to some sources, the Chief Minister was slapped during the public hearing, and the attacker even tried to scuffle with her before security personnel intervened and restrained him.

The sudden assault triggered chaos at the venue before security personnel overpowered the man and took him to the Civil Lines police station. The Chief Minister, left shaken by the incident, underwent a medical examination.

During initial questioning, the accused identified himself as 41-year-old Rajesh Khimji Sakariya, claiming to be a resident of Rajkot.

The investigation is being carried out under the supervision of the Delhi Police Commissioner, with the police also coordinating with Rajkot Police to verify his identity and background.

The attacker is being interrogated at the police station. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with the police investigating whether this was an impulsive act or a premeditated conspiracy.

Police said some court papers were recovered from the attacker, who also allegedly tried to hurl stones at Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during the incident.

The incident has raised serious questions over the security of the Delhi CM. The BJP has condemned the attack on Rekha Gupta, while officials confirmed that the Union Home Ministry has been informed.

Questions After The Attack

This incident raises several critical questions about the security protocols in place.

  1. How did the attacker manage to breach the security?
  2. Was he acting alone or was there an accomplice?
  3. Did he first check if access to the Chief Minister was easy?
  4. Was it a spontaneous reaction or a planned conspiracy?
  5. Why did the police fail to act immediately?

Following the attack on the Chief Minister, Delhi Police teams are interrogating the accused while senior officers, including the DCP North District, are inspecting the spot. Staff members are being questioned on how the attacker gained entry, and action against security personnel responsible for CM’s protection is also being considered.

An eyewitness named Anjali, who was among those gathered, told ANI that the incident was deeply disturbing. “This is wrong. Everyone has the right to be heard at a Jan Sunvai. If someone can pose as a visitor and end up slapping her, it’s a big concern. I was there, the person was talking and suddenly he slapped. The police immediately took him away,” she said.

Another witness, Shailendra Kumar, who had travelled from Uttam Nagar with a complaint about sewer issues, recalled the moment of unrest. “As soon as I reached the gates, chaos broke out because the CM had been slapped. This should not have happened,” he said.

A senior officer told ANI that CM Gupta is stable and has been examined by doctors. “She may have suffered a minor blow to the head. The claims about slapping or stone-throwing are exaggerated. Such incidents in politics are unfortunate, but Jan Sunvai will continue. The CM is resting but has insisted that her programmes will not be cancelled,” the officer said.

Political leaders across party lines strongly condemned the incident. Delhi LoP Atishi said, “The attack on Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is highly condemnable. In a democracy, there is a place for disagreement and protest, but there is no place for violence. Hoping that the Delhi Police will take the strictest action against the culprits. It is hoped that the Chief Minister is completely safe.”

Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav also termed the attack “unfortunate,” questioning how safe ordinary citizens can feel if even the Chief Minister’s security can be breached. Speaking to ANI, he said, “This incident exposes the reality of women’s safety. If the CM of Delhi is not safe, then how can a common man or woman feel secure? Such incidents must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”
